Yes, you should wash the fabric before you work with it. Wash the fabric the way you’ll treat the finished scarf to remove any shrinkage and see what it’ll be like after it goes through the wash.
Some scarves never get washed if they are worn carefully, but some scarves (like my scarf I use when I go running) get washed regularly and need to be able to handle it.
