DIY Scissors Costume

Learn how to make a DIY scissors costume that can be worn over your clothes. This is great for rock, paper, scissors, or a sewing inspired costume!
One of the most used tool in the sewing room is the scissors. I’m always using, losing, and looking for my scissors.
The classic scissors are the orange Fiskars scissors, so I decided to make a simple DIY scissors costume. Wearing the scissors around your neck means you can wear your regular clothes for a really easy costume!
I almost made the scissor handles functional so that I could open and close it while moving my legs, but I wanted to make the scissors really, really easy to make.
If you want to make it functional I would add a giant silver button and a buttonhole for the silver screw. Then you can open and close the handles.

- 1/2 yard orange felt
- 1/2 yard batting
- 1/2 yard interfacing
- Silver felt or faux leather scrap
- Orange yarn
- Sewing tools
- Sewing machine
Cut two pieces of orangle felt in the shape of scissor handles. Curve the bottom so that they can be layered on top of each other. I chose to do two opposite handles instead of a right (or left) handed scissors where the handles are different shapes.
Also, I was running out of orange felt so I had to sew my pieces together.
Interface the back of the handles. Make sure you are applying the interfacing on opposite sides so that your scissors will be opposite shape.
Put a piece of orange felt down first. Then place a piece of batting. Then place your handles on top. Pin the three layers together.
(I ran out of orange felt and had to use red felt for the very back.)
Sew around the edges 1/8 inch from the edge. Make sure you don’t miss sewing around the holes in the middle.
Trim away the batting and the back felt. I used scissors and angled them away from the top to cut more from the back them from the front.
Cut out a circle from silver felt or silver faux leather.
Layer the scissor handles on top of each other with the curved edges at the bottom matching up. Place the handles so they look closed. Clip them together.
Sew the silver circle onto the center of the curved area. This will hold all the layers together.
Tie some orange yarn around the handles to hang around your neck.
