How to Sew an Invisible Zipper in a Pillow

Learn how to sew an invisible zipper in a pillow to make an easy pillow cover. Use a sewing machine and a regular sewing machine foot.

There’s something so cozy and fun about having lots of throw pillows on the couch. I love cuddling up on the couch with a throw pillow or two, and then switching out the pillow covers for different holidays.

I spent years with boring pillows on my couch, and now I’ve gone a little crazy by making all. the. pillows. Learn how to make a pillow cover with a invisible zipper!

What fabric should I use to make a throw pillow?

There are two types of fabric I recommend for a throw pillow. I recommend using canvas for stability and structure. If you want to use quilting cotton, which I do recommend, I would interface it before using it so that it also has stability and structure.

This white and coral print is so bright and fun. It looks great next to all my pink and red Valentine decorations. The great thing about an invisible zipper pillow is that the closure is essentially invisible so it looks like a complete throw pillow.

I used a home decor canvas fabric which helps the pillow cover keeps it’s shape. The great part about pillow covers is that you can choose any color or fabric print that matches you house. If you choose a cotton or a quilting cotton then you’ll need to interface the fabric before sewing.

How to Sew an Invisible Zipper in a Pillow

supplies

• 2/3 yard canvas weight woven fabric – you can use quilting cotton, but you’ll need to interface the fabric first to give it stability
• 18 inch invisible zipper
• 18 inch by 18 inch pillow form

Cut the fabric into two squares that are 20 inches by 20 inches.

Unroll the invisible zipper teeth and press it flat. The zipper will not lay flat and straight, but don’t worry, the zipper is not ruined.

To make sure everything lines up correctly, I like to lay down both squares with the invisible zipper in the middle. It doesn’t matter that much with my fabric that can go any direction, but it is very important with directional fabric.

Take the left zipper tape side and flip it over so the front side of the zipper is facing down along the edge of the left square.

Sew along the woven section of the zipper tape right next to the zipper teeth. Start at the top and sew as far down as possible.

Take the right zipper tape side and flip it over so the front side of the zipper is facing down along the edge of the right square.

Sew along the woven section of the zipper tape right next to the zipper teeth. Start at the top and sew as far down as possible.

Place the squares right sides together. Put a zipper foot in and sew from the stitches at the bottom of the zipper to the bottom of the squares.

Pin the three remaining sides and corners together. Make sure the zipper is halfway open.

Sew around three three sides. Sew across the top of the zipper and the bottom of the zipper.

Trim the corners to reduce the bulk.

Turn the pillow right side out. Poke out the corners.

Place the pillow form inside the pillow cover and zip it closed. You finished!
