Learn how to make a double gauze blanket or a DIY muslin blanket. This beginner sewing project makes a cozy, handmade gift for the holidays.
I love the texture and warmth of double gauze fabric. It’s so interesting to look at, and I love the feel of it against my skin when I snuggle with it. I’ve been eyeing some double gauze blankets (or muslin blankets as stores like to call them) and decided to make one for my home.
Double gauze is a great beginner fabric to work with. It’s easy to sew like cotton, but it looks luxurious. It’s easy to find, and it can be warm or cool depending on what you need. I like the solid colored double gauze blankets, but you can sometimes find double gauze in a print which is so fun.
This DIY muslin blanket is really easy to sew since it’s all straight lines (hems!). It’s so fun to make a gorgeous throw to decorate your home and snuggle with your family.
When looking to purchase a blanket like this, it is labeled as a muslin blanket. So this technically is a muslin blanket, but if you talk to anyone who sews they know that muslin is a type of fabric that doesn’t look like this. This is actually double gauze fabric which is the perfect fabric for a blanket.
I’m excited to have this gorgeous throw in my front room or at the foot of my bed. It’s a bold happy color that works really well with my color scheme.
What fabric do I use for a muslin blanket?
This type of blanket is labeled as a muslin blanket, but that is not the type of fabric you want to use. You will want to purchase double gauze fabric made from 100% cotton.
I love double gauze fabric. It’s easy to find double gauze fabric at a fabric store. It’s often with the baby fabrics, and there are often baby prints. It comes it lots of different solid colors too.
The great thing about double gauze is that it’s reversible. It looks the same on both sides which makes it a quick and easy sewing project.

How to Make a Double Gauze Blanket or DIY Muslin Blanket
Supplies
- 2 yards of double gauze fabric
- Sewing tools
- Sewing machine
- (optional: to make the blanket extra cozy get another 2 yards of double gauze fabric and sew it together like this DIY flannel blanket)
Instructions
Cut off the selvedge edge off of both long sides. Straighten the edges of both short sides.
If you have a serger, then serge all four sides. This is not to finish the edges. This is my trick I use to quickly and easily sew perfect 1/4 inch hems since the serging marks the width for me.
If you do not have a serger, then sew a line 1/4 inch from the edges around the whole rectangle.
The serging makes the fabric easy to fold at the right place, so that I don’t have to iron anything. (Double gauze also wrinkles and hides any imperfections.) Fold a short side at 1/4 inch, and then another 1/4 inch. Sew that hem in place.
Do the same to the other side.
Fold a long side at 1/4 inch, and then another 1/4 inch. Sew that hem in place. I found that the hem was small enough I didn’t need to worry about doing a mitered hem. There wasn’t too much bulk in the corners.
Do the same to the other side.
Press the hems to set the thread and folds.
Wash the double gauze blanket in hot water and dry in a hot dryer. It’ll make the fabric get soft and crinkly and perfect. You finished!
