What fabric should I use for a floor pouf?

A fabric that is strong and durable, like canvas, will work best. The great thing about canvas fabric is that you can buy a solid fabric and add your own design or print, or you can buy canvas in pretty much any print you want. There are so many options!

What zipper should I use for a floor pouf?

In this tutorial I used an invisible zipper to make it easier to sew, and so that it would hide better. Invisible zippers are the weakest of all the zippers so if you are stuffing your floor pouf full and it’ll get a lot of use, I would switch to another zipper.

My floor pouf is not going to be getting a lot of use or action so I’m not worried about my zipper breaking.

I used an invisible zipper that matches the flowers, but it contrasts with the black background of the fabric so it is more obvious. I did this so that it is easier to see what I’m doing in the tutorial, but it is a little more visible.

If I would’ve used a black invisible zipper like the black background, it would have been almost invisible.

What is a PDF sewing pattern?

A PDF pattern is a sewing pattern designed on the computer and organized so that it can be printed on several letter or A4 size pieces of paper.

I love using PDF sewing patterns because if the pattern gets ruined or if my children or I changed sizes, I can always print it again. It’ll never be destroyed since I have a digital version!

How do you use a PDF sewing pattern?

Open the PDF on a computer and click print. When printing make sure that the scaling is set to 100% or no scaling so that the pattern prints at the correct size.

Once the pattern is printed it can be taped together to get the full size. Then the pattern can be cut for each pattern piece size or individual sizes can be traced so that the pattern can be used again and again. Learn how to use PDF sewing patterns.

Cut out 6 pattern pieces.

sew two sides right sides together

Don’t sew all the way to the point, but start and end 3/8 inch away.

start 3/8 inch from point

Match one pattern piece right sides together at the side with the two sewn pieces and sew. Now you have three pieces sewn together and one side of the floor pouf.

Do the same to the last pattern piece and the last two sewn pieces so that you have two halves.

sew another piece side together

Press the zipper teeth open, unrolled, and flat. If you need help with the zipper check out sewing an invisible zipper without an invisible zipper foot.

Place the left side of the zipper tape right sides together with the left side of one half. Match up the center of the zipper with the center of the side. Pin.

Sew the zipper tape to the fabric.

Place the right side of the zipper tape right sides together with the right side of one half. Match up the center of the zipper with the center of the side. Pin.

pin zipper to other side

Sew the zipper tape to the fabric. Zip up the zipper to check if it works now that it’s sewn in.

sew zipper to other side

Place the two halves right sides together, with the zipper lining up and UNZIPPED. Pin all the way around in one big circle.

pin all the way around

Sew from the top of the zipper all the way around the floor pouf until you get to the bottom of the zipper. Backstitch when you start and stop. Use a zipper foot at the bottom of the zipper to get as close as possible.

sew from zipper top around to zipper bottom

Turn the floor pouf right side out. Stuff it full with polyfil or scraps of fabric. You’ll need a lot more than you think. Fill it about 90% full so that when you put weight on it, it can squish out a little and become more of an oval than a ball.

Zip up the zipper and you finished!
