What fabric should I use to make a key fob?
Use either quilting cotton or cotton canvas to make a key fob. Quilting cotton is less strong, but it is slightly easier to sew since you’ll be sewing several layers at once.
I also added fusible fleece to the inside of the key fob to give it strength and a little bit of cushion. It makes it more comfortable to wear on your wrist, while giving the inside the stability that it needs.
What is a PDF sewing pattern?
A PDF pattern is a sewing pattern designed on the computer and organized so that it can be printed on several letter or A4 size pieces of paper.
I love using PDF sewing patterns because if the pattern gets ruined or if my children or I changed sizes, I can always print it again. It’ll never be destroyed since I have a digital version!
How do you use a PDF sewing pattern?
Open the PDF on a computer and click print. When printing make sure that the scaling is set to 100% or no scaling so that the pattern prints at the correct size.
Once the pattern is printed it can be taped together to get the full size. Then the pattern can be cut for each pattern piece size or individual sizes can be traced so that the pattern can be used again and again. Learn how to use PDF sewing patterns.

Cut out a piece of fabric that is 12 inches long and 3 inches tall. Cut out a piece of fusible fleece that is 12 inches long and 1.5 inches tall. You can also use the free pattern at the end of the post!
Fuse the fusible fleece to the center of the back of the fabric.
Fold the rectangle in half so that the long edges meet and press. Fold the long edges in to meet in the center and press. Fold all three folds so that the long edges are enclosed and press.
Sew along each long side 1/8 inch from the edge to close the folds, strengthen the fabric, and keep everything neat and tidy.
Slide the clasp on so that when the rectangle is folded right sides together the clasp is inside the fold.
Sew the two ends together with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Sew multiple times for a really strong seam and backstitch when you start and when you stop.
Turn the fob right side out and slide the clasp to the seam. Pinch the fabric closed around the clasp and the seam allowance.
Sew 1/2 inch from the fold to enclose the seam allowance and keep the clasp at one end. Sew multiple times and backstitch when you start and when you stop for a really strong seam.
You finished!

Hi! Do you pre-wash the fusible fleece? If so, how do you wash it? Thanks!
I do not prewash my fusible fleece. I’m worried about washing the fusing glue off.
Thank you for the tutorial! This is a
great idea for using small pieces of fabric. I’m thinking of making some for a charity fair at my son’s school.
That is a great idea! It’s easy to make a lot at one time!
