Learn how to sew a heart bookmark for a fun Valentine sewing project. Use scraps of fabric for this sweet beginner sewing project.
I love to read. I might even love it more than sewing! I hope to encourage my kids to love to read, so any little fun thing I can do helps.
For Valentine’s day coming up, I made some little heart corner bookmarks. They can use them and remember that mom loves them and that they (hopefully) love reading!
What fabric should I use to make a bookmark?
The best fabric to use for bookmarks is quilting cotton. Its easy to find, easy to sew, and it comes in every print and color imagineable. Since these bookmarks are small, you can use up all your favorite small scraps of fabric!

Supplies
- Scraps of quilting cotton fabric
- Scraps of lightweight interfacing
- Sewing tools
- Sewing machine
Cut out four fabric squares 3.5 inches by 3.5 inches for each bookmark you will be making. Cut out two fusible interfacing squares the same size.
I did both sides of the hearts the same color and the backing the same color.
Apply the interfacing to 2 of the fabric squares: one on a heart piece and one on a backing piece.
On the back of the non-interfaced heart piece, draw out the top of the heart. I did a modular heart shape.
Pin the heart pieces right sides together with the drawn side facing you.
Sew the top of the heart, but not the two bottom sides.
Trim the seam allowance from the top of the heart to reduce the bulk. Clip into the inner heart point.
Turn the heart right side out and carefully poke out the points.
Press the hearts flat.
Edgestitch the top of the heart to keep it secure and make it look nice.
Pin the heart into the corner of the interfaced back piece. See how the heart will be in two seam allowances, but will stay out of the other two seam allowances? That is the shape and placement you want.
Place the remaining square on top with right sides together. Pin all the layers together.
Sew around the square pivoting at the corners with a 3/8 inch seam allowance. Leave a 2 inch hole for turning and backstitch when you start and when you stop.
Trim the corners to reduce bulk.
Turn the bookmark right sides out and poke out the corners. Press the bookmark flat.
Edgestitch around the edges to close the hole. Make sure you don’t sew over the top off the heart. You need the top of the heart loose so that it can be used as a bookmark. You finished!
