My Favorite Places to Buy Fabric

These are my favorite places to buy fabric online and in person. I’ve been sewing and shopping fabric for years and go back to the same places.
I have been deliberately and thoughtfully sewing for myself for over a decade. I have tried all sorts of fabric shops and fabric types. I have seen how these fabrics wash and wear, and I figured out my favorite places to buy fabric.
I keep going back to these places again and again for either their great fabric or their large selection. Some places I have to be really selective so I pick high quality so I’ll give you all my best tips.

Best Places to Buy Fabric
Buy Fabric Online
Buy Fabric New
Raspberry Creek Fabrics
Raspberry Creek Fabrics* is actually local to me, but they also ship out their fabrics. They print their own fabrics so you can get really unique designs. I love their cotton spandex jersey and their cotton spandex French terry. I often get their prints for my children, and I also love getting their swimsuit fabric for the whole family.
Besides getting their fun prints, I love their solids and basics. I wear mostly solids so it’s a great place to get it.
Raspberry Creek Fabrics* also sells great solid woven fabrics. It’s often where I get fabric for pants, shirts, and dresses.
Spoonflower
I’ve only recently started shopping at Spoonflower*, and it’s because I just can’t find the unique prints anywhere else. It’s a place for people to upload their fabric designs for everyone to buy.
I almost always buy the regular cotton fabric since it’s the cheapest, and I am usually using it for beginner sewing projects.
I love looking through the different choices, and it’s especially fun at holidays and for themed items.
I als0 LOVE getting Spoonflower* cheater quilt fabric prints to make quick and easy quilts for friends and family.
Sewing Studio
I love to get high quality and unique apparel fabrics at Sewing Studio. They are a smaller shop so there’s not always a lot and it moves through quickly. I have gotten both woven and knit fabrics with great success.
Stylemaker Fabrics
I love to get high quality and unique apparel fabrics at Stylemaker Fabrics. They often choose fabric leftover from high end clothing brands, so you can get some great fabrics. I have gotten both woven and knit fabrics with great success.
Buy Fabric Secondhand
A Thrifty Notion
I have been shopping at Thrifty Notion for about a year. They sell secondhand fabrics online. Sometimes they are given stock from fabric shops that are closing, and sometimes people donate fabric they don’t want.
I have found everything from quilting cotton and canvas to apparel fabrics. I have actually purchased a lot of apparel fabrics, and I haven’t been able to sew with them yet! Like any thrift shopping it’s important to check regularly and only choose what you’ll use and what’ll last.
Destashify
Destashify is an online shop where people can sell fabric from their stashes. There are some great fabrics that come through at a great discount. I love buying from other people’s fabric collections. It helps them and me!

Savers
I love looking for fabric secondhand in person. The best thrift store near me is Savers, but figure out what has the best fabric near you. Some amazing and beautiful apparel fabrics have come through the Savers near me.

Buying Notions, Interfacing, Tools, Etc
Wawak
I started buying my thread, zippers, interfacing, buttons, fusible fleece, and batting on Wawak years ago. It was where the tailor shop I worked at bought all their stuff, and I’ve been shopping there ever since. They have great prices and really fast shipping!

I believe small sewing moments can create great joy. Find your own “right” way to sew. -Heather
Oops! I meant buying fabric online doesn’t lend itself to ease.
When I started back sewing after a long hiatus, I was horrified to find that all the great fabric stores were gone. At least we had Joann’s, even if it doesn’t have the variety of fabric types I was used to. At least you could buy some notions quickly if needed. Now all I have is Hobby Lobby. The other shops in my area are dedicated to quilting almost exclusively. I don’t think that buying fabric is particularly practical. You don’t know what you are buying. Fortunately, I still have quite a stash I can shop from.
Hi Heather! This is a great article, thanks! Where did you get the overalls you wearing? They are SO cute! TIA!
Those overalls are the Burnside Bibs, but I altered them a lot to get that fit https://sewhouse7.com/products/burnside-bibs
Thank you for the ideas and where to buy. If you live in the Los Angeles area, another place is the garment district in downtown Los Angeles. If you go, plan on going for at least half a day. I have found some great bargains.
That’s a great option!
I loved when Fabric.com was in business online. Their “act fast Fridays” were great deals to purchase name brand fabrics at 50% off most times. I now purchase from Hancock of Paducah. They have a range of prices and you can get brand names as well. Spoonflower has lovely fabrics and tons of choices but their price point is very high for the average sewer.
I miss Fabric.com too! Spoonflower is definitely one of the more expensive options. I don’t shop there very often.
