Learn how to make a DIY mummy costume by sewing an overlay for a hoodie and sweatpants. Add strips of fabric for a great wrapped mummy look.

My son had to be an egyptian inspired character for school, so to be unique we decided to make a mummy costume. Mummies are classic Halloween characters, and this turned out to be a fun costume to make. My son loves it and is so excited to be a creepy mummy for his school project.

My whole goal with make the costume was to have regular clothing underneath and to not alter it so that he could keep wearing it throughout the winter. I decided to make an overlay for the hoodie and sweatshirt with strips of fabric that can be worn over top and then removed after he dresses up.

The overlay is not completely covered with strips of fabric because this amount of strips took me a fair amount of time. If I would’ve done more it would’ve taken a lot longer. Having the tan fabric show through is enough to look like more wrappings, and both my son and I love the final look.

What should I use for the overlay and strips of fabric?

I used a white mesh curtain* for the overlay, and it worked great. I didn’t need to finish any edges, but it had the look I wanted.

For the strips I used white tulle and white mesh that I had it my fabric scraps. I would cut them into strips to use throughout the overlay. I also used tan knit fabric from a t-shirt cut into strips. I would pull the strips to make them curl and look even more like strips. All these strips didn’t need to have their edges finished which makes the process a lot easier.

What base should I start with?

Start with white or tan clothing underneath. I used a tan hoodie and sweatpants set* which worked perfectly. If you don’t need to be warm, you can also use a t-shirt and shorts instead.

This costume uses the set and a guide to cut out the overlay, so you’ll need your base to get started.

Supplies

Cut out tons strips of fabric from the white mesh, white tulle, and tan fabric. Pull the strips to stretch them and make them curl onto themselves. Make some strips long, some medium, and some short.

start with base sweatshirt and pants

Lay out your sweatshirt flat and smooth. Fold your mesh curtain in half and lay it over top the hoodie. Cut a bodice shape out at least 2 inches bigger.

Lay out the hood part flat and smooth. Cut out a hood shape at least 2 inches bigger through two layers of the mesh curtain.

cut mesh bigger than hoodie and pants

Lay the strips over one layer of the bodice or hood and pin in place. Sew around the hoodie or hood shape to secure the strips. If the strip is extra long add some securing stitches in the middle of the strip.

Sew the bodice and hood into a hoodie. Don’t worry about finished the edges, but make sure to trips any strips that are longer than the seam allowance.

Pull the hoodie overlay over the hoodie for the mummy top. The hoodie part is finished!

add strips and sew hoodie

Do the same for the pants by creating an overlay in the shape of the pants 2 inches bigger. Pin the strips onto the pant legs and secure on each side. Sew in the middle of the strips to secure in the middle of the pant leg.

Sew the pants together. Add some elastic to the waist so it won’t fall off. The elastic just needs to be tight enough to secure them over the sweatpants.

Pull the overlap pants over the sweatpants. You finished!
