Learn how to make DIY Huntrix costumes from the movie Kpop Demon Hunters. These costumes are sew and no-sew to make them easy and fun.
Do you know any kids that love the new movie Kpop Demon Hunters? There has been dance shows and sing-a-longs all summer. Ever since my girls saw the movie, they’ve talked about being the girls from Huntrix for Halloween.
Since I knew Huntrix would be a popular costume this Halloween, I started early making a costume tutorial so that everyone else can make them too. I made them as easy as possible with sew and no-sew, while also be recognizable and warm.

Which parts of the costume require sewing? Which parts are no sew?
For the clothing that is closer to the body and more likely to get dirty, I sewed the trim on so that they could be washed. For the jackets I did mostly no-sew which makes them fast and easy, but they are not washable. Or they might be washable, but I’m not willing to try washing them until after Halloween.
In my research I found that it was important to get all of the supplies early. Some of the items I purchased have sold out in just a couple of weeks.

Why isn’t the costume exactly like the movie?
I tried to simplify the costumes so that the overall look was recognizable without getting crazy with every little detail. My girls really love the finished look and that’s the most important.
Also, We live in Northern Utah which traditionally has a cold Halloween. We always plan our costumes around being warm so I changed the shorts to pants, and I made the shirts and jackets slightly longer. Even with all these additions they probably have to wear multiple leggings and long sleeve shirts under the costume to keep them warm.
All of this is a personal preference and you can use short shorts, and make the jacket and shirts as cropped as you want.

Can I make this into a family costume?
Yes! I purchased a Huntrix t-shirt* and acted like an excited fan. This is an easy way to make a Kpop Demon Hunters family costume.

How to make DIY Kpop Demon Hunters Huntrix Costume
Rumi

Supplies
- Black sweatshirt*
- White turtleneck shirt*
- White and black leggings – I used my pocket leggings sewing pattern with black fabric* and white fabric*
- Gold bias binding*
- Iron on gold stars*
- Stick on gold trim* and stick on gold trim*
- Black 1/4 inch elastic*
- Purple hair* (get pros and cons of hair vs wig below when I talk about Rumi’s hair)
- Gold hair pins*
- Tall white boots* with black shoelaces*
Instructions
I changed Rumi’s shorts to leggings so that my daughter will be warm enough. I used my pocket leggings sewing pattern with black fabric and white fabric. You can also make shorts with my sewing pattern.
If you don’t want to make leggings or shorts, you can start with white shorts or leggings and try adding a black stripe on the side.

Take the black sweatshirt. Cut off the neckband, hem band, and sleeve bands. Cut up the center front. Cut another inch from each side of the center front (creating a 2 inch opening). I prefer sewing bias binding on curved corners so I curved the top and bottom of the center front, but you can do 90 degree corners if you want.

Finish all the cut edges with the gold bias binding.

Add two pieces of elastic to the center front in an “X”. I didn’t make it so the elastic could open and close. I just sewed them on and my daughter puts the jacket on over her head.

Add the stick on gold trim to the jacket. I did a gold sunburst from the elastic and gold trim that goes over each shoulder. Then I added gold trim down the back of each sleeve. I also ironed a gold star on to each sleeve.
Last of all I made a gold belt with gold fabric and some of the sequin trim that the other girls use. You can also use a gold belt you have or thrift.

Rumi Hair
We used purple extension hair to make Rumi’s braid. We did a mix of a dragon braid and a real braid. Then we added gold hair pins all the way down the braid.
The good things about having the purple hair with her hair is that it’s comfortable, it’ll last as long as she needs, and she can play with it. The bad things about having the purple hair with her hair is she can’t take it off until the end, it’s a little tricky to use it again once you take it out, it takes some time to do the hairstyle, and you have to prep it before you use it.
The good thing about having a purple wig is that it can be taken off and put on, it’s really fast to get ready, and can be used again and again. The bad thing about having a purple wig is I’ve seen that it takes a long time to ship, it’s uncomfortable to wear a wig, it can easily get snagged or ruined if not careful.
You can also just do a dragon braid and spray it purple with temporary hair color!

Mira

Supplies
- White sweatshirt*
- Black t-shirt*
- White skirt*
- Gold tassels*
- Gold bias binding*
- Wide sequin trim*
- Thin sequin trim*
- Braided gold trim*
- Stick on trim*
- Gold snaps and snap pliers*
- Black leggings*
- Black choker necklace*
- Pink wig*
- White and black boots*
Instructions
I made a white skirt with the extra white fabric I had from the leggings, but you can also start with a white skirt. Cut a slit in the left side (if it’s knit fabric you don’t need to worry about finishing the fabric). Sew three rows of braided gold trim around the slit.
Add a piece of black fabric or black ribbon at a diagonal across the front of the skirt. Sew a row of braided gold trim on the black strip. Sew some tassels hanging off the black strip on the right side.

Take your black t-shirt. Sew some braided gold trim and thin sequin trim in this design on the front of the t-shirt.
After I sewed these on, I shortened the t-shirt to just below my daughters waist and just below the lowest trim. If the shirt was too long it would cover the details on the skirt.

I thrifted this black choker necklace and it had some silver details on it. I took of the silver details and sewed a gold button to the center front.

Take the white sweatshirt.

Sew the tassels onto the jacket on the front back and around the shoulders. My tassels were about two inches apart.

Once the tassels were sewn on I added the stick on gold trim over the top of the tassels. The tassels can still move, but you don’t see the loops on the top of the tassels.

Add one row of stick on gold trim to the back of the sleeves.
Add four gold snaps to each side of the front of the jacket to mimic the look of military buttons.

Put all the pieces together for Mira’s look.

Mira’s Hair
Mira has long fuschia hair. We tried doing hair extensions combined with my daughters hair for Mira’s hairstyle, and it didn’t work well. Then I looked into buying a Mira wig which is available, but they were 2 or 3 weeks out to ship.
Instead I bought a long pink wig. It’s the right color and length, but I could not add two half up ponytails and keep the wig looking good. Instead we added some gold bobby pins to the wig to give it a center part and keep the bangs slightly out of my daughter’s face.
It looks great and it’s recognizable, but it’ll be tricky keeping the wig and hair looking nice all the way to Halloween. It tangles really easily!

Zoey

Supplies
- White sweatshirt*
- Black t-shirt*
- White skirt*
- Gold bias binding*
- Wide sequin trim*
- Thin sequin trim*
- Braided gold trim*
- Stick on trim*
- Gold snaps and snap pliers*
- Black leggings*
- Black boots with rhinestones* (my daughter’s friend had these boots already so I couldn’t link to the exact boots)
Instructions
I made this white skirt, but you can start with a white skirt and cut two slits in the front. Knit fabric doesn’t fray so you don’t have to finish the edges.
In this photo I have an iron on piece for the belt, but it didn’t stay on well so I ended up replacing it with the wide sequin trim. The sequin trim matches better with the rest of the look, so I’m glad I changed it. I also added two gold trims hanging off each side to mimic the chains that hang off of Zoey’s belt.

Add the thin sequin trim and wide sequin trim in this design to the black t-shirt. After I sewed the trim in a diamond, I cut out the fabric in the middle.
After I sewed these on, I shortened the t-shirt to just below my daughters waist and just below the lowest trim. If the shirt was too long it would cover the details on the skirt.

Change the white sweatshirt just like Mira’s by cutting off the bands and finishing with bias binding.
Add the gold braided trim in hanging curves around the shoulders of the jacket. It is sewn on in four places in the front and four places in the back.
Then add two large hanging curves with the braided trim that goes under the armpits.

Add gold snaps to the jacket just above where the trim is sewn on.

Add three short rows of stick on gold trim on the back of the sleeves.

Put all the pieces together to finish the look!

This tutorial was so helpful I made the Rumi costume for my 2 daughters and they loved them.
Yay! I’m so glad it worked out!
Helped me so much
yay!
I just wanted to say THANK YOU so much for this!!! My daughter is obsessed and requested to be Rumi for Halloween. All the typical places online I would go to look for costumes are either ridiculously expensive or are from scammy looking companies with zero product reviews – so I couldn’t be confident in what I was purchasing. I’m pretty crafty and I loved your detailed instructions- this allowed me to be confident in making my daughter and her friend’s costumes this year. THANK YOU again!!
I’m so happy it will help you! I don’t think manufacturers were ready for the popularity of Kpop Demon Hunters!
Good day! Do you have a pattern for Zoey’s skirt? Thanks!
At this time I do not, but the skirts I made are 1/4 circle skirts. You can use this calculator to make your own. https://www.omnicalculator.com/everyday-life/circle-skirt
I was just complaining to my husband this morning as to how I could possibly make a Rumi costume for my 8 yr old!!! THANK YOU for saving her Halloween and my sanity 💗
yay! i’m so glad it will help!
