DIY Bluey Costume

Learn how to make a DIY Bluey costume with a sweatshirt and felt. Put it together with some simple accessories for a really fun Halloween costume.

My kids love the Bluey show, and it’s one of the only kid shows I can watch. I actually love watching it with my kids. I love the imagination, the music, and the beautiful art.

I have talked to several parents who also love watching Bluey, and I realized that Bluey could be a really popular Halloween costume this year. I started planning the DIY Bluey and Bingo costumes, and my kids got so excited to wear them!

The best part about these costumes is that all the pieces are easy to find separately and sewing is only required for the sweatshirt. All of the pieces are going to be used by my kids this year, and the sweatshirt will be played with as a dress up or actually worn as a sweatshirt throughout the winter.

I was not planning on doing the eyebrows, but my husband kept encouraging me to add them. I’m so glad I did since it’s the perfect, silly touch to the costume. I made a free pattern for the pointed, standing ears that you can use for any animal costume, and it comes with a large and small size.

What is a PDF sewing pattern?

A PDF pattern is a sewing pattern designed on the computer and organized so that it can be printed on several letter or A4 size pieces of paper.

I love using PDF sewing patterns because if the pattern gets ruined or if my children or I changed sizes, I can always print it again. It’ll never be destroyed since I have a digital version!

How do you use a PDF sewing pattern?

Open the PDF on a computer and click print. When printing make sure that the scaling is set to 100% or no scaling so that the pattern prints at the correct size.

What fabric should I use for the Bluey costume?

I chose a cotton sweatshirt and leggings as a base for this costume since we live in an area that is cold at the end of October. Whenever I plan costumes I have to plan for extra warmth. If you live somewhere warm you could use shorts and a t-shirt with a hood.

For the felt that I added to the sweatshirt, I chose a high quality wool felt since it’s still easy to work with but can be washed. It is sturdy and holds up well. I don’t recommend using acrylic felt or craft felt because it’ll look worn out after being washed once.

  • Wool felt in three colors of blue: light blue, sky blue, and navy blue – if you use wool felt it can be left on the sweashirt and washed. Acrylic or craft felt will be wrecked pretty quickly after going through the washing machine

  • Sky blue fabric paint
  • Light blue gloves
