Learn how to make a DIY Anubis costume with gold accessories, a stuffed dog head, and black clothes. This egyptian god is fun and easy.
My son is currently learning about Egypt in his world studies, and he has to go to school in an Egyptian costume. We decided to make a really cool Egyptian God costume of Anubis. I sewed all the accessories and paired it with black clothing, but you could also just wear gold jewelry to make it easier!
I wanted to do a dog mask for my son, but his school doesn’t allow any masks. To creatively work around the rule, I made a stuffed dog head to sit on top of his head. Let me show you have to make this DIY Anubis costume!
Who is Anubis?
Anubis is the Egyptian God of funerary rites, protector of graves, and guide to the underworld. He is usually depicted as a dog or a man with a dog or jackal head.
Sometimes the head is black and the body is a human brown color, and sometimes the head is black and the body is also black.

What do I need for an Anubis Costume?
Start with a base of a basic outfit like these black pajamas* we had. You can choose another color, but I wanted the fabric to blend in like the wolf head.
I made a black balaclava (with my free balaclava sewing pattern) and sewed the stuffed dog head and head piece onto it. Then I made a bunch of gold accessories to complete the outfit.
I’ll go into details about all the handmade details below.
DIY Anubis Costume
Supplies
- Solid color pajamas (black pajamas*)
- Stuffed dog head
- Head piece
- Balaclava
- Gold fabric
- Interfacing
- Sewing machine
- Sewing tools
Headdress
Start with a hood or a balaclava (get my free balaclava sewing pattern). Either cut the head off of a black stuffed dog or make a stuffed dog head. I made one using this stuffed wolf sewing pattern, but I only used the head. I increased the size by 200% to make it big enough, and then made it using the instructions.
I hand sewed the head onto the balaclava all around the base. Then I cut strips of black and gold fabric, sewed them together, and hemmed the edges. I hand sewed the striped piece onto the back of the stuffed dog head so that it fell down around both heads and shoulders.
Accessories
If you don’t want to sew anything, you can just wear a bunch of gold jewelry for necklaces, bracelets, and belts.
I sewed two bracelets, two anklets, a belt, and a neck piece.
To make them:
- Cut two of one shape (rectangles for bracelets and anklets, rectangles for the belt pieces, “U” for the neck piece).
- Interface with fusible interfacing one side of a shape.
- Pin the shape pieces right sides together.
- Sew around the shape and leave a 2-3 inch hole for turning. Backstitch when you start and when you stop, and pivot at the corners.
- Turn it right side out and poke out the corners. Press the shape flat.
- Add Velcro or snaps to be able to wear it. Add any extra details for fun.
