Learn how to make a DIY star ornament with plaid fabric and a button. It’s a cute, easy, and simple Christmas sewing project.
DIY Christmas ornaments are a great way to use up scraps of fabric, batting, interfacing, and buttons. There’s so many beautiful ornaments you can sew with just scraps!
I’ve always wanted to make a star shaped ornament since it’s so classic. It works well with a red buffalo plaid since it’s makes it a little extra cozy and casual which is exactly the way I decorate.
What fabric works for a star ornament?
I used flannel fabric for my star, but you can also use quilting cotton. I added interfacing and batting for strength and shape.

How to Make a DIY Star Ornament
Supplies
- Scraps of plaid quilting cotton or flannel
- Scraps of fusible interfacing
- Scrap of batting
- Scrap of ribbon
- 1 button
- Sewing tools
- Sewing machine
Apply the interfacing to the back of the plaid fabric.
Draw out your preferred star shape onto the interfacing.
Cut out two fabric stars from the interfaced fabric in the exact same shape but mirrored.
Cut out two stars from the batting. I like to snip just the tips off of the batting points so that if the batting stretches out it won’t poke out at the points.
Cut a piece of ribbon 8 inches long. Fold it in half.
Place a fabric star right side down, then a batting star, then the ends of the loop at the top point, then another batting star, and then the fabric star right side up. Clip or pin all the layers together.
Sew around the edges 1/8 inch from the edge. Pivot at all the corners.
Trim any fabric or batting layers that shifted while sewing for a clean look.
Sew the button onto the center of the star. Sew the button by hand or sew the button with a sewing machine. You finished!
