Make shorts and leggings for kids with the Pocket Legging Sewing Pattern. Comes with an elastic waist and with or without side pockets.
I love making clothes for my children, and I really love making clothes for them that are functional and give them the ability to play. They love having pockets for anything important, and these leggings or shorts are perfect for playing all day.
I wanted to design a pair of leggings with a great side pocket for treasures and important things. I wanted a comfortable elastic waistband and lots of different lengths. I combined all of these into the Pocket Legging Sewing Pattern: the perfect basic leggings with or without pockets.

IMAGINE:
- Seeing your kid gather treasures in their pockets
- Seeing your kid having the freedom to play because their leggings fit them
- Developing your skills of sewing knit fabric
- Making lots of fun shorts, cropped leggings, and leggings for your kids to wear
- Enjoying sewing and finishing a fun sewing project

I made several versions for my daughters in the three different lengths and they have been wearing them all summer. They are actually their preferred choice to wear because they fit well, and they love the pockets! It makes my momma heart happy to see them enjoying the clothing I made for them.

Shorts with pockets:
Fitted stretchy shorts with side pockets and an elastic waist. The shorts are a little longer than average to get the full length of the pocket. Each leg has three seams so the pockets can be easily sewn into a seam. There is a simple fold over hem to finish the bottom edge.
Cropped leggings with pockets:
Fitted stretchy cropped leggings with side pockets and an elastic waist. Each leg has three seams so the pockets can be easily sewn into a seam. There is a simple fold over hem to finish the bottom edge.

Shorts and Leggings without pockets:
Make the shorts, cropped leggings, and leggings without pockets. Each leg is one piece so this version is really fast to put together. This version is still finished with an elastic waist and a simple fold over hem on the bottom edge.

What fabric works for the Pocket Legging sewing pattern?
These leggings need a knit fabric with at least 40% stretch so that they can move and stretch as the child moves and plays.
You can use fabric like cotton spandex jersey, French terry, or double brushed poly. The pattern is super versatile and works with lots of different knit fabrics!
The pocket leggings should be cut so that the stretch will go around the torso and legs to make them comfortable.

This pattern is useful for both summer and winter since it can be shorts, cropped leggings, or leggings. It works for lots of children sizes, so it can be used through their whole childhood.
