Use this free eye mask sewing pattern for costumes and Halloween to make a comfortable, versatile, and durable mask for adults and children.
We have started talking about costumes at our house, and we are throwing around a bunch of ideas. One of the best places to start with costumes is with the mask. It really pulls together the whole costume!
This free eye mask sewing pattern is great for superheroes, masquerades, animals, pirates, vigilantes, etc. It’s so versatile and can be customized for any costume. It also works for adults and children! Let’s learn how to make an eye mask!
What fabric should I use to make an eye mask?
I found the best fabric to use to make an eye mask is felt and matching knit fabric. The felt is sturdy and durable, but the knit fabric is soft against skin. Also, I found it was really important to use fusible interfacing in between the two fabrics to make it easier to sew and to give the knit fabric stability.
How can I make an eye mask comfortable against skin?
It would be really easy to make an eye mask out of felt. You would have to sew anything, but felt is not very comfortable against skin. To make the eye mask comfortable against skin I used an interfaced knit fabric on the inside. I tried athletic knit, cotton spandex jersey, and ponte de roma, and they all worked great for this sewing project.
How can I make the eye mask unique?
This is the fun part of sewing! You can choose bright colors or bright thread. You can add details like bias binding, ribbon, tassels, pompoms, etc. You can have details coming out on the edges to give it flair and pizzazz. The options are endless!
What is a PDF sewing pattern?
A PDF pattern is a sewing pattern designed on the computer and organized so that it can be printed on several letter or A4 size pieces of paper.
I love using PDF sewing patterns because if the pattern gets ruined or if my children or I changed sizes, I can always print it again. It’ll never be destroyed since I have a digital version!
How do you use a PDF sewing pattern?
Open the PDF on a computer and click print. When printing make sure that the scaling is set to 100% or no scaling so that the pattern prints at the correct size.
Once the pattern is printed it can be taped together to get the full size. Then the pattern can be cut for each pattern piece size or individual sizes can be traced so that the pattern can be used again and again. Learn how to use PDF sewing patterns.

Cut the knit fabric, felt, and interfacing so it’s a rectangle just bigger than the eye piece.
Use an iron to fuse the fusible interfacing to the back of the knit fabric.
Carefully trace the eye mask shape onto the interfacing.
Cut out the eye mask shape from the interfaced knit fabric. Cut all the tracing lines off so they don’t show up in the final mask.
Pin the knit eye mask wrong side onto the felt. Pin all the way around the outside and around the eye holes.
Take the elastic and slip the ends in between the layers on each side of the mask. Pin each side in place.
Optional: if you are added details that will be outside of the mask shape pin them between the layers. On the red mask I added velvet ribbon loops on each eye corner. The ends of the ribbon pieces are sewn in between the layers to secure them.
Sew around the edge of the mask on the outside and around the eye holes a scant 1/8 inch from the edge. Use matching thread to blend in or use a contrast color for a unique look.
Optional: if you are going to add something onto the mask pin it to the felt now like I did with this single fold bias binding and made an infinity design around the eyes.
Sew around your added details to secure it to the mask.
Trim around the felt just outside of the stitching lines. You want to cut the felt slightly bigger than the knit fabric that is behind so that it doesn’t show from the front. Be careful not to cut through the elastic or added details!
You finished!
