Learn how to make a casserole hot pad with a free sewing pattern. This large hot pad protects surfaces and makes a great handmade gift.
Want a fun handmade gift idea? Try a casserole hot pad. It’s a quick sewing project that only uses a fat quarter of fabric, and the pretty fabric is so fun to show off and protect surfaces from hot pans. It would be easy to make several to give to your friends or neighbors!
I’ve seen larger hot pads around, and I didn’t realize how much I would enjoy making them and using them in my kitchen. They are super useful, washable, protect surfaces, and they help a little bit with spills.
What fabric and batting should I use for a casserole hot pad?
Since the hot pad will be interacting with a lot of heat, it’s very important to use cotton for everything. Use quilting cotton fabric, cotton batting for inside, and cotton thread. These materials are all still washable, but can stand up to the heat.
What is a PDF sewing pattern?
A PDF pattern is a sewing pattern designed on the computer and organized so that it can be printed on several letter or A4 size pieces of paper.
I love using PDF sewing patterns because if the pattern gets ruined or if my children or I changed sizes, I can always print it again. It’ll never be destroyed since I have a digital version!
How do you use a PDF sewing pattern?
Open the PDF on a computer and click print. When printing make sure that the scaling is set to 100% or no scaling so that the pattern prints at the correct size.
Once the pattern is printed it can be taped together to get the full size. Then the pattern can be cut for each pattern piece size or individual sizes can be traced so that the pattern can be used again and again. Learn how to use PDF sewing patterns.

Use the pattern piece to cut two rectangles from the fabric. Use the pattern piece to cut two rectangles from the cotton batting.
Sandwich the layers like this: fabric face down, batting, batting, and fabric face up.
Pin around the edges and throughout the center of the rectangle sandwich.
Draw lines that you want to quilt. I did perpendicular rows two inches apart.
Quilt the four layers together by sewing along each line. This step is a lot easier if you have a walking foot*, but it’s possible without one.
The layers probably shifted slightly as you quilted, so trim any layers that are extending out.
Take your bias binding and sew it around the edges on the back of the hot pad and join the bias binding for a continuous edge. (How to sew bias binding.)
Flip the bias binding around to the front and clip or pin in place. Carefully sew or topstitch along the fold to secure the bias binding in place. You finished!
