Learn how to make a DIY Minion costume inspired by any of the Despicable Me movies. This no-sew costume works for kids or adults.
My family loves all of the Despicable Me movies. We have watched all of them, and this year my husband and I are dressing up as Gru and Lucy for Halloween. My daughters already have their costumes, but my son decided to go as a Minion so that we could have a family costume.
The minions from Despicable Me are so funny. We all love them. I loved putting this together (it’s a no-sew costume!), and my son loves how comfortable and simple this costume is for him!

What pieces do I need for a DIY Minion costume?
The main pieces are a yellow hat*, yellow shirt*, and overalls*. The accessories are goggles*, black gloves*, and black shoes. Then I’ll teach you how to make the Gru design for the front overall pocket with black felt later in this article.
Since all of these pieces can be found for kids or adults, this costume works for any age. And if you already have some of these pieces it makes this costume really easy to put together!

How do I put the Minion image on the overall pocket?
The best part of this costume is that you can attach the black felt design to the pocket with safety pins! It makes the costume super easy to make, and it makes the overalls wearable after Halloween.

Can this be a family costume?
Yes! The best part is you can have a Gru, Lucy, and lots of minions to make a really fun and family costume. If you have more people you can even add Gru’s dog, and the three daughters.

How to Make a DIY Minion Costume
Supplies
- Yellow shirt*
- Yellow hat* or use a free hat sewing pattern to make one
- Overalls*
- Goggles*
- Black gloves*
- Black shoes
- Scrap of black felt
- Scissors

Instructions
To make the Gru brand design for the overalls, first measure the size of the front pocket.

Cut a black felt circle just smaller than the measurement of the pocket.

Cut a diamond out of the middle of the circle. Cut a small circle out of the diamond piece.

Get five safety pins and open them.

Use one safety pin for the center circle and four safety pins for the larger circle. Attach the circles to the pocket to with the safety pins.

The safety pins are not a permanent solution and you can barely see the metal in the design. If this makes the costume easier to make and it makes the overalls more wearable after since I can easily take the felt off, then it’s a great solution. You finished!
