I created a free sewing pattern for these bow elastic hair ties, and they come in three different shapes: square end, round end, and diamond end. They all make really cute bows, and I can’t wait to make all the hair bows for handmade gifts!

What fabric works best for Bow Elastic Hair Ties?
The best fabric for these simples bows are quilting cotton, cotton lawn, or chambray when it’s cut on the bias. These types of fabric are soft with a little bit of body, they are easy to sew and press well, they come in every color and print, and they are durable.
What is a PDF sewing pattern?
A PDF pattern is a sewing pattern designed on the computer and organized so that it can be printed on several letter or A4 size pieces of paper.
I love using PDF sewing patterns because if the pattern gets ruined or if my children or I changed sizes, I can always print it again. It’ll never be destroyed since I have a digital version!
How do you use a PDF sewing pattern?
Open the PDF on a computer and click print. When printing make sure that the scaling is set to 100% or no scaling so that the pattern prints at the correct size.
Once the pattern is printed it can be taped together to get the full size. Then the pattern can be cut for each pattern piece size or individual sizes can be traced so that the pattern can be used again and again. Learn how to use PDF sewing patterns.

Cut out two pieces of fabric for each bow on the bias.
Place the matching pieces right sides together and pin. Sew around the edge with a 3/8 inch seam allowance and leave a 2 inch hole for turning. Backstitch when you start and when you stop.
Use scissors and pinking shears to trim all the corners and to notch the outer curves.
Turn the bow right side out through the hole. Use a point turner to carefully poke out all the corners.
Press the bows flat with the seam allowance tucked inside for a crisp edge.
Edgestitch the hole closed. Use matching thread for the stitching to hide, but a lot of the edgestitching will be hidden in the finished knot.
Tie the bow onto a elastic hair tie with a square knot. You finished!
