Learn how to make a DIY Bluey costume with a sweatshirt and felt. Put it together with some simple accessories for a really fun Halloween costume.
My kids love the Bluey show, and it’s one of the only kid shows I can watch. I actually love watching it with my kids. I love the imagination, the music, and the beautiful art.
I have talked to several parents who also love watching Bluey, and I realized that Bluey could be a really popular Halloween costume this year. I started planning the DIY Bluey and Bingo costumes, and my kids got so excited to wear them!
The best part about these costumes is that all the pieces are easy to find separately and sewing is only required for the sweatshirt. All of the pieces are going to be used by my kids this year, and the sweatshirt will be played with as a dress up or actually worn as a sweatshirt throughout the winter.
I was not planning on doing the eyebrows, but my husband kept encouraging me to add them. I’m so glad I did since it’s the perfect, silly touch to the costume. I made a free pattern for the pointed, standing ears that you can use for any animal costume, and it comes with a large and small size.
What is a PDF sewing pattern?
A PDF pattern is a sewing pattern designed on the computer and organized so that it can be printed on several letter or A4 size pieces of paper.
I love using PDF sewing patterns because if the pattern gets ruined or if my children or I changed sizes, I can always print it again. It’ll never be destroyed since I have a digital version!
How do you use a PDF sewing pattern?
Open the PDF on a computer and click print. When printing make sure that the scaling is set to 100% or no scaling so that the pattern prints at the correct size. Learn how to use PDF sewing patterns.

What fabric should I use for the Bluey costume?
I chose a cotton sweatshirt and leggings as a base for this costume since we live in an area that is cold at the end of October. Whenever I plan costumes I have to plan for extra warmth. If you live somewhere warm you could use shorts and a t-shirt with a hood.
For the felt that I added to the sweatshirt, I chose a high quality wool felt since it’s still easy to work with but can be washed. It is sturdy and holds up well. I don’t recommend using acrylic felt or craft felt because it’ll look worn out after being washed once.

Supplies
- Sky blue sweatshirt (from Jiffy or Primary) and leggings (from Primary)
- Wool felt in three colors of blue: light blue, sky blue, and navy blue – if you use wool felt it can be left on the sweashirt and washed. Acrylic or craft felt will be wrecked pretty quickly after going through the washing machine
- White canvas shoes
- Free pointed ears sewing pattern – get it at the end of the post
- Sky blue fabric paint
- Light blue gloves
- Sewing tools
- Sewing machine
Cut out three navy blue oval spots. Cut out one oval light blue spot. Cut out two sky blue slightly curved tails. Cut out two navy blue tail tips.
Sew the light blue oval onto the front of the sweatshirt. I sewed right through the pocket, and it’s no longer usable.
Sew two navy blue spots onto the back of the sweatshirt.
Sew the tail tips onto the ends of the two tails.
Sew the two tail pieces together into one.
Pin and sew the tail onto the back of the sweatshirt.
Paint the shoes blue with the fabric paint. I thinned the fabric paint a little bit with water to make it more of a dye.
Cut out four ear pieces and two inner ear pieces.
Place two of the ears together and sew the sides and up around the point.
Trim the points to reduce the bulk.
Swivel the bottom of the ears so that the seams are on top of each other. Sew across the bottom and leave a 1.5 inch hole.
Trim the points to reduce the bulk.
Turn the ears right side out. Poke out the corners.
Tuck the seam allowance into the hole. Edgestitch across the bottom to close the hole.
Place the inner ear pieces on the ear and sew them in place. Be careful to not flatten the 3-D shape.
Trim any part of the inner ear the extends below the bottom of the ear.
Sew the ears onto the top of the hood.
Sew the last oval spot onto the back of the hood.
Cut out two long rectangles from the light blue felt. Roll up the rectangles into two small tubes. Hand sew them so that the tube doesn’t unroll anymore.
Hand sew the tubes on as eyebrows on the edges of the hood opening.
You finished!
