Learn how to sew a soda can cozy to help keep drinks insulated and cold. This beginner sewing projects is perfect for summer and handmade gifts.
Do you love summer days when you get to hang out with friends and family and enjoy a nice cold drink? What do you do to keep your drink cold?
Make some soda can cozies with handles to keep your drinks cold. They are washable and reusable, so that you can use them all summer. It also keeps your hand comfortable if you don’t like holding a cold can, the strap stabilizes it in your hand, and the cozy can soak up any condensation.

What fabric should I use to make a soda can cozy?
A soda can cozy can be made from quilting cotton which is easy to sew and easy to find. There are lots of prints and colors to make it extra fun. Quilting cotton is also washable so these cozies can be washed if they get dirty.
What should I use to insulate the soda can cozy?
This soda can cozy has both fusible interfacing for strength and stability, and it has fusible fleece which insulates the can and helps keep it cold longer. You can use thicker fusible fleece, but I prefer a lightweight fusible fleece to make it easier to sew.
Can the soda can cozy be adjustable?
Depending on the width of your Velcro and which direction you sew it on, you can make the soda can cozy adjustable so that it can fit different sizes of cans.

Instructions
Cut out two pieces of fabric that are 10.5 inches wide and 4.5 inches tall. Cut a piece of fusible fleece and a piece of fusible interfacing that are 10.5 inches wide and 4.5 inches tall.
If you want THE STRAP pattern pieces, you can get is in the pattern and tutorial for just $5.
Fuse the interfacing to the back of the inner fabric and the fusible fleece to the back of the outer fabric.
Cut the Velcro to 3.5 inches long. Sew one side of the Velcro .5 inch away from one fabric’s short side. Sew the other side of the Velcro .5 inch away from the other fabric’s short side.
*If you want the soda can cozy to be adjustable, cut the Velcro in half and instead of sewing it vertically (like I demonstrate in the pictures) sew each half of the Velcro horizontally on each end. Each piece of fabric will have two horizontal pieces of Velcro on the short side.
Place the two pieces of fabric right sides together and pin. Sew around 3/8 inch from the edge. Leave a 3 inch hole for turning. Pivot at the corners and backstitch when you start and when you stop.
Trim the corners to reduce the bulk.
Turn the cozy right side out through the hole. Carefully poke out the corners with a point turner.
Press the cozy flat and make sure the seam allowance is tucked inside at the hole. Sew 1/8 inch around the edge and over the hole to close it. Pivot at the corners.
Wrap the soda can cozy around a can to check the size. You finished!

I love it and it will be my next project. Dealing with some personal things right now but it is on my list!
These are so cute! I’m going to make a set for my Memorial Day bbq! I noticed the instructions don’t account for the strap, which I’m sure I can figure out how to add, but if you have recommended dimensions for the strap piece, that would be helpful. Thanks!
