Learn how to sew an egg shaped coaster perfect for Spring and Easter. This beginner sewing project is a great way to use fabric scraps.
I’m ready to sew Spring and Easter sewing projects. I wanted to make something that was quick and easy, and I came up with these egg shaped coasters.
They are so fast, but it was so fun to use smaller pieces of fabric and even use pieced fabric like old quilt blocks. It makes the eggs look like they are striped or decorated!

What fabric should I use to make a coaster?
These coasters were designed to use with quilting cotton. It’s a great fabric to work with, comes in every print and color, it’s easy to sew and easy to find! This is the best scrap fabric sewing project!
What should I use to make a coaster absorbant?
You can use cotton batting which is absorbant, but it is slightly harder for beginners to use. In this tutorial I used fusible fleece which is less absorbant, but it’s easier for beginners to use.

What is a PDF sewing pattern?
A PDF pattern is a sewing pattern designed on the computer and organized so that it can be printed on several letter or A4 size pieces of paper.
I love using PDF sewing patterns because if the pattern gets ruined or if my children or I changed sizes, I can always print it again. It’ll never be destroyed since I have a digital version!
How do you use a PDF sewing pattern?
Open the PDF on a computer and click print. When printing make sure that the scaling is set to 100% or no scaling so that the pattern prints at the correct size.
Once the pattern is printed it can be taped together to get the full size. Then the pattern can be cut for each pattern piece size or individual sizes can be traced so that the pattern can be used again and again. Learn how to use PDF sewing patterns.

How to Sew an Easter Egg Coaster
Supplies
- Egg shaped coaster sewing pattern – get it at the end of the post
- Scraps of quilting cotton or unused quilt blocks
- Scraps of fusible fleece
- Scraps of interfacing
- 1/2 yard of double fold bias binding (both 1/2 inch or 1/4 inch work)
- Sewing tools
- Sewing machine

Instructions
Cut out two pieces of fabric or pieced fabric, one piece of fusible fleece, and one piece of fusible interfacing with the egg shaped pattern.

Iron the interfacing and fusible fleece to the back of the pieces of fabric.

Place the two fabric pieces on top of each other with wrong sides facing. Line up all the edges. Quilt the layers together in the design you’d like. I did a lot of different quilting on all the different coasters I made.

Trim any edges that extend past the other layers so that the egg layers are uniform.

Decide if you want to finish the edges with a 1/2 inch double fold bias binding or 1/4 inch double fold bias binding. The 1/2 inch covers more of the fabric and makes a nice bold edge, but it is harder to sew with the tighter curves. The 1/4 inch covers less fabric so you have to be precise when sew, but it is easier to sew around the curves.

Cut a piece of bias binding. If you use 1/2 inch it’s roughly 14 inches with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. If you use 1/4 inch it’s roughly 16 inches with a 1/2 inch seam allowance.

Sew the short ends of the bias binding together. Sew the bias binding to the wrong side of the coaster. Be careful around the corners.

Fold the bias binding around to the front. Sew the front of the bias binding to secure it to the coaster.

The bias binding often makes the coaster curl, so press it flat to make it lay flat. You finished!
