Learn how to make a DIY Gru and Lucy costume inspired by the Despicable Me movies. This no-sew costume is a great couple costume for Halloween.

My family loves all of the Despicable Me movies. We have watched all of them, and this year my husband and I are dressing up as Gru and Lucy for Halloween. We love picking costumes that work with my husband’s shaved head, and our height difference.

I loved putting this together (it’s a no-sew costume!). We had a lot of the items in our closets, and then bought a couple of things to make it look like the characters.

How to Make a DIY Gru and Lucy Costume

What pieces do I need for a DIY Gru costume?

Gru wears a black zip up hoodie*, black pants, black shoes, and a black and gray striped scarf*. If you already have some of these pieces it makes this costume really easy to put together!

The best part of Gru is his eyebrows. To achieve the look I bought temporary sticker mustaches*. I chose the one I liked the best, flipped it upside down, and cut it in half. I love that this set has two of each so I have several options and we can use one style twice.

The mustache sticker doesn’t irritate my husbands real eyebrows, and they are really easy to take off at the end of the night.

This costume is so easy and comfortable. My husband can do regular activities while wearing this costume.

What pieces do I need for a DIY Lucy costume?

Lucy is another easy costume. She wears a blue trench coat with a polka dot scarf and glasses on her head. I found a turquoise trench coat* (I love finding specific items here!) but you can also get a light blue trench coat*. My coat wasn’t long enough so I wore a turquoise dress I already had. Then I purchased a polka dot scarf.

If you already have some of these pieces it makes this costume really easy to put together!

After I took these pictures I realized that I needed to flip the scarf to the light side with darker polka dots. This scarf is reversible so it can go either way, but it looks like Lucy no matter which way I do the scarf.

Can this be a family costume?

Yes! The best part is you can have a Gru, Lucy, and lots of minions to make a really fun and family costume. If you have more people you can even add Gru’s dog, and the three daughters.
