This keychain card wallet is the perfect project for quilting cotton fabric. Quilting cotton is easy to find, easy to sew, and comes in every color and print imaginable. You can make the pockets, tab, or loop with different fabrics, or make it all from the same fabric.

How to Make a Keychain Card Wallet

Supplies

  • Free keychain card wallet sewing pattern – get it at the end of the post
  • Fat quarter of quilting cotton OR scraps of quilting cotton
  • Fat quarter of medium weight fusible interfacing
  • 1 lobster clasp*
  • Plastic snaps and pliers*
  • Sewing tools
  • Sewing machine

Instructions

Cut out all the fabric and interfacing pieces as directed by the pattern pieces.

Iron the interfacing onto the back of all the fabric pieces. For the pockets press them in half with wrong sides together. Put the interfacing inside the fold and fuse in place.

Fold one short end of the tab over 1/4 inch and press. Fold the tab in half with long edges matching and wrong sides together. Press. Fold each long edge in to meet at the center fold and press. Keep the short end folded and the long edges inside and fold the first fold. All the raw edges except for one short end will be enclosed inside. Press.

Sew along the three folded sides 1/8 inch from the edge.

Fold the loop in half with non-interfaced edges matching and wrong sides together. Press. Fold each non-interfaced edge in to meet at the center fold and press. Keep the non-interfaced edges inside and fold the first fold. All the raw edges except for the short ends will be enclosed inside. Press.

Sew along the three folded sides 1/8 inch from the edge. Fold the loop around the lobster clasp and match up short ends. Baste the ends together.

Edgestitch along each pocket fold.

Using the markings on the non-interfaced main piece, place the top pocket on the line and stitch 1/8 inch from the bottom of the pocket.

Place the middle pocket on the middle line and stitch 1/8 inch from the bottom of the pocket.

Place the bottom pocket on the bottom edge of the main piece and stitch 1/8 inch from the bottom of the pocket.

Place the tab on the center top of the main piece over the pockets. Baste it in place.

Add one side of a plastic snap to the end of the tab.

Place the other side of the snap on the bottom pocket where the tab snap would connect.

Place the loop and clasp on one of the top corners touching the top of the pocket. Baste it in place.

Place the main interfaced piece on the main non-interfaced piece with right sides together. Starting and the bottom sew around the rectangle with a 3/8 inch seam allowance. Leave a 2 inch hole for turning right side out.

Trim the corner seam allowance.

Turn the card wallet right side out. Carefully poke out the corners.

Press the card wallet flat with the seam allowance of the hole tucked inside.

Edgestitch around the card wallet and over the hole to close it. You finished!

Do you have any pointers regarding or alternatives to snaps? I’m finding them difficult to unsnap.
