What fabric can I use for this fabric firework?

The best fabric to use is quilting cotton in either solids or small prints. The fireworks are not that big, so you don’t want a large scale print that will overwhelm the size.

It’s also fun to choose fabrics in red, white, and blue.

Do I need to use interfacing?

Yes! It’s very important to use interfacing for these fireworks. If you don’t, the firework will lose it’s shape when you stuff it. It makes it a little tricky to sew the ends, but it’s worth it when it’s completed.

Instructions

For every firework, cut out one firework piece and two ends from fabric and one firework piece and two ends from fusible interfacing.

cut out fabric and interfacing pieces

Apply the fusible interfacing pieces to the wrong sides of the fabric pieces with an iron.

apply interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric

Cut a piece of cording 3 inches long. Sew the end of the cording onto the center of one end piece. Do this by sewing the end of the cording on, then flip it so it’s covering the stitches and sew again. The double stitching will make it extra strong.

sew the "fuse" to one of the circles

Take the fabric firework piece and match up the notched sides with wrong sides together. Sew the seam with a 3/8 inch seam allowance. Leave a 2 inch hole for turning in the center. Backstitch every time you start and when you stop.

Use your fingers to press the seam open from edge to edge.

Divide each firework end into 4 equal sections. Divide each circle end into 4 equal sections. Match one end to a firework end and match up the sections. Pin them right sides together. Pin in between each section.

Since you are sewing a curved edge to a straight edge, it feels like the circle end is too big for the space but they can be sewn together.

pin the bottom and top to the ends of the fabric tube

Sew the ends to the firework. Sew slowly and adjust the fabric regularly to keep everything in place. I do this by stopping with my needle in the fabric, lifting the presser foot, adjusting the fabric, putting the presser foot back down and moving forward.

sew the ends in place

As you can see my stitches, I didn’t not have straight seams and I caught the fabric in a couple of places but it’s not super visible once it’s flipped right side out.

sewing the circle to the straight edge can be tricky

Turn the fabric right side out.

Stuff the firework with stuffing. Fill it so that it’s pretty full and fills out all sections of the firework well.

With a hand needle and thread, sew a ladder stitch to close the hole.

Make all three sizes of fireworks and lots of different fabrics for a fun assortment of fireworks.
