Learn how to make a DIY fall towel with patches. This fall sewing project is a great way to customize kitchen towels for the autumn season.
Are you excited for Autumn this year? I want to get my fall decorations out right now, so instead I made some really cute DIY fall towels instead. These towels are so fun and easy to make, and they look great in my kitchen.
I have been seeing a lot of chenille type towels with pumpkins and leaves, so I decided to make my own version with fall patches. I love how both the leaf version and the pumpkin version turned out!
What patches to use?
You can use any sew on or iron on embroidered patches to make DIY fall towels. You can also use chenille patches (patches with a fuzzy towel like texture) that are very popular right now. Just know that the towel and patches with get washed a lot, so make sure they are extra sturdy and durable.
Iron on or sew on?
Iron on embroidered patches are much easier to apply since you can just iron them on. Sometimes the glue bond is really strong and the patch never falls off, but sometimes the glue bond isn’t great and the patch eventually falls off. You can add some stitching to the iron on patch, but sometimes the patch and glue are too thick to sew through.
Sew on embroidered patches are harder to apply since you are sewing it on, but they are very secure and don’t ever fall off. These take much longer to apply.
Where to buy patches?
I found a lot of great patches on Amazon:
Tips for sewing on a patch
- The patch will be stiff which will make it easier to sew onto a towel.
- Don’t pick a towel that is too thick or it will be really hard to sew.
- Use a washable glue stick to glue the patch to the towel, or use pins to pin the patch in place.

DIY Fall Towel with Patches
Supplies
- Pastel maple leaf patches* or Pumpkin patches* (I took the faces off of these pumpkin patches – the patches are not iron on and quite flimsy)
- Kitchen towels* or hand towels in solid colors
- Sewing tools
- Sewing machine
Pin or gluestick the patches onto the bottom front of the towel.
Pin all the patches on to create a pattern or design at the edge of the towel.
Carefully sew around each patch with matching thread.
I had to change my thread a couple of times to work with each leaf color.
I also made some pumpkin towels, so I sewed around each pumpkin patch with orange thread.
I love the simplicity of the black and orange hand towel, but the pastel leaves work better in my kitchen!
