I want to say “Welcome to my home” when you first walk in my home. I want to say “Home Sweet Home” in my kitchen: the heart of my home. And now I can with an easy DIY welcome mat. I love the look of these Welcome mats, and I love how easy they are to customize. You can choose any word or image silhouette, and you could make one for every holiday! I’m already dreaming up mats for Easter, Summer, Halloween, and Christmas.

I’ve had this idea for laser cut felt rugs in my mind for a long time. I searched for laser cut felt rugs and found this gorgeous inspiration.
I decided to give it a try with some craft felt to see how I liked it before spending money on some high-quality wool felt. Now that I see how much I love a simple DIY welcome mat, I really want to try it again with wool felt and a bigger DIY welcome mat or rug. I used acrylic felt by the yard* and cut pieces 12’x24′ to use on the Cricut Maker’s large mat*. Then I had the Cricut Maker* cut the words out for me. I cut the large background piece by hand. You could add interfacing to your felt and cut it with whatever cutting machine you have, or you could draw your words and cut it by hand. I chose simpler words and shapes because I wanted a simpler look and style, and it makes it easier for you to cut by hand if you want.
After the pieces were cut I used Fabric Fuse* to glue the fabric together. I did one layer of felt for the words, and two layers of felt for the background. Then I added some puffy paint to the back to help prevent the DIY welcome mat from sliding on the floor. You could also attach or use a non-skid rug pad if you’d like.
I made a quick video to show you the process. This really is a simple project where most of the work is in cutting.
