Refashion Projects

One of my passions is making something new from something old. There is so much potential when you refashion something unwanted into something loved. There are lots of refashion projects and refashion tutorials to help you get inspired! Don't miss out on a bunch of upcycling projects too!

I love to refashion because it saves the environment. Instead of throwing an unwanted garment in the trash to an full landfill or donating it to an already overflowing thrift store, there are so many amazing things you can do with that garment. If you can't make the garment into something new, you can always shred it and use it for stuffing!

I love to refashion because it saves time. We are all short on time so saving a hem, a neckline, or a ruffle is a great way to save time! Refashioning can be slightly altering the garment, but it can also be using a pattern to cut out a new garment from the old garment. That's how you save details from the original.

I love to refashion because it saves money. Sewing can be an expensive hobby, and buying clothing for myself and my children can be expensive. Refashioning garments you already have or garments you find at the thrift store are great alternatives to buying fabric new by the yard.

I love to refashion because it saves memories. When I recieve clothing from a family member that has passed on, there is so many memories and so much meaning in that fabric. It feels so special to make something new from it so that it can keep being loved.

Instagram post 2197668348173538078_380642737 This year my goal was to have my kids make gifts for each other using my scraps and remnants. I've never made gifts at all in years past so this was a bit if a stretch for me.
They've always given Christmas gifts to each other, but this year I wanted them to be handmade. There's a lot of thought and love that goes into a gift when it's handmade, and I wanted my kids to think about the receiver. It has been so sweet spending time with each child as they think about their siblings. I try not to stress about the mess as we are working.
Am I doing a fair amount of the work? YES.
Am I worried that each kid is SO excited about the gift that they'll ruin the surprise? YES.
Are we making fun memories that we will cherish? YES.

Instagram post 2196312016686176988_380642737 I made this first felt gingerbread 🏠 6 years ago for my baby boy. 😱 He loved playing with it and put the candies in it over and over again. We've moved since then and I lost it somewhere.
This year I made another one for my kids to play with in different colors, and my daughter's have been putting the candies in again and again. It's such a fun activity for them and it keeps them busy for just a little bit.

Instagram post 2195584310160057723_380642737 I'm feeding my son's love of Harry Potter by making him a Gryffindor ornament. Isn't it fun?!
If you were in a Hogwarts house which would you be in? I'm unashamedly and happily in Hufflepuff.
I cut the felt and the iron-on vinyl with my #cricutmaker, sewed it with my sewing machine, and applied the iron-on vinyl with an easypress. It's a little silly to use so many machines for such a quick project, but I love the result!

Instagram post 2194150825608235142_380642737 I'm made my family some Christmas tees for fun and I love them. I love holiday and funny graphic tees. You can get the free SVGs on my blog if you're interested in making some!
I like wearing mine instead of wearing a ugly Christmas sweater.

Instagram post 2192505691510695136_380642737 When @deliacreates designed tidepool inspired fabric for @projectrunandplay I just had to buy it. My parents took our family to an area with tidepools several times when I was a child, and it's one of my favorite places. I love wearing this fabric inspired by my favorite place. It reminds me of all those adventures!
.
I made the #hudsonpants pattern because it's also a favorite. I only bought one yard so I had to use different fabric for the waistband. I even took a shortcut and sewed the tie in a now on the front instead of threading it through.
.
These are my go to pants for comfort and I just love them!

Instagram post 2191240894785693039_380642737 I love decorating for Christmas! I made this ornament last week and I love it. I lean towards simple decor with natural texture. I made a different leather ornament last year, and I love seeing them next to each other. Do you enjoy making Christmas ornaments?

Instagram post 2186509074722735611_380642737 I can wait for my kids to play with this Christmas tree! It's actually an Advent calendar and you hang up an ornament each day, but I know my kids will just decorate the tree over and over again. I love having decorations that can be touched and played with by little kids. I don't worry about anything breaking, and they have a Christmas activity to do while I do holiday prep.
There is a free pattern for this Advent calendar on the blog!

Instagram post 2185421770458512009_380642737 I've been using the #dreambox for a couple of months, but because I customize everything (I almost never sew a pattern as-is) I took the table off and added a side table for a different layout. This layout works perfectly in my sewing room, and I can watch my kids do art and homework while I sew. I couldn't fit the whole tour in a 1 minute video, but you can watch the whole thing on my blog or YouTube.
I was given the dreambox to review, but I bought the side table. @theoriginalscrapbox

Instagram post 2182530081140875402_380642737 Are you hosting a dinner next week? I will be celebrating Thanksgiving next week, but I've also already celebrated Canadian Thanksgiving. I love using cloth napkins since it feels luxurious, and they are reusable!
We have old ones were use as a family all the time, and it was time for some nice ones for nice dinners. I combined upcycled silk from @darngoodyarn and quilting cotton for strength and beauty.
What have you made for your kitchen?
